A drill before you drill

Fluid flow in the annular space between two cylinders is encountered in various industries.

In the field of oil and gas, accurate predictions of annular frictional pressure losses are imperative to ensure safe and optimized drilling operations. Inaccurate predictions, however, can potentially lead to a number of costly drilling problems.

These pressure losses depend on annular eccentricity - which is how off-center the drill string is within the open hole during the drilling operation. The aim of this project is to develop a new model for accurately predicting frictional pressure losses in annular flow, that takes into account annular eccentricity and flow behaviour employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The outcome of this research is beneficial for designing, operating and troubleshooting of drilling facilities.
