2020 Playford Memorial Trust Scholarships now open

The Playford Memorial Trust provides scholarships, awards and internships for high achieving students working in areas of strategic importance to the State.

Honours and fourth year scholarships

  • Playford Trust Honours (University) Scholarships – 12 $7000 scholarships
    The Trust in partnership with Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, offers four $7000 Honours scholarships for each institution. From 2020, the Trust contributes $4000 towards each of the 12 awards, and the universities provide the additional $3000 for each award. Being awarded an Honours scholarship does not preclude students from applying for a Playford Trust PhD scholarship. Students undertaking a MPhil instead of Honours will also be considered. These scholarships are for Honours students studying in the Trust’s priority areas – all of strategic importance to South Australia.

Business and industry partners Honours and fourth year scholarships

  • Aurecon/Playford Trust Scholarship – 1 $10,000 scholarship
    The scholarship is for a fourth or fifth‐year student studying electrical engineering and business/commerce, or undertaking a similar second degree, or a fourth‐year electrical engineering student. In recognition of Aurecon’s commitment to promoting gender equality, first preference will be given to female applicants. The successful applicant will be guaranteed a work placement at Aurecon.
  • Coopers/Playford Trust Honours Scholarship – 1 $7000 scholarship
    The scholarship in barley breeding science or yeast fermentation is supported by Coopers Brewery.
  • Fay Fuller/Playford Trust Honours Scholarship in Health Science – 1 $7000 scholarship
    The scholarship in health science will be awarded to a student majoring in public health and is supported by the Fay Fuller Foundation.
  • GSA/Playford Trust Scholarship in Earth Sciences – 1 $5000 scholarship
    The Geological Society of Australia – South Australian Division, supports this scholarship in earth sciences.
  • OZ Minerals/ Playford Trust Minerals Industry Honours Scholarship – 1 $9000 scholarship
    This Honours scholarship in geoscience, mining engineering or chemical engineering is supported by OZ Minerals.
  • Ultra‐Electronics/Playford Trust Scholarship (New) – 1 $10,000 scholarship
    This scholarship is for a third or fourth‐year student in electronic engineering, computer science, systems engineering or applied physics. Ultra Electronics has a strong diversity program and the Trust encourages indigenous students and female students to apply. The scholarship includes a work placement opportunity.

PhD Scholarships

  • Playford Trust PhD Scholarships – 2 scholarships – $5,000 a year for 3 ½‐years
    The Trust is once again offering two PhD scholarships, which it will fund entirely. The scholarships are intended to supplement an existing Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship (RTPS) or similar institutional PhD stipend scholarship. A copy of the letter confirming one of these stipends must be supplied to the Trust before the scholarship can be awarded. Applicants must be commencing research in one of the following priority areas.
    • Agriculture, aquaculture and food production
    • Water, energy and climate change
    • Advanced manufacturing and new technologies
    • Health sciences and associated new technologies
    • Mining and resources development

First year scholarships

Universities (and secondary schools) are encouraged to bring the following opportunities to the attention of their eligible students.

  • Playford Trust Regional Science and Engineering Scholarships – 6 $4000 scholarships
    Offered to students from regional South Australia who enrol as an undergraduate to study science, engineering, mathematics or technology subjects at one of the three South Australian universities. They will be awarded to promising students needing assistance with overcoming the practical and financial disadvantages associated with having their home base located well away from the city of Adelaide.
  • Adelaide Hills Council/Playford Trust Scholarship – 1 $6000 scholarship
    A scholarship is being offered to a student from the Adelaide Hills Council area who plans to begin a bachelor’s degree relating to science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM). This $6000 scholarship is offered with the support of Adelaide Hills Council.
  • Chartwells/St Ann's College/ Playford Trust Residential Scholarships – 2 $7000 scholarships
    In partnership with Chartwells and St Ann’s College, the Trust is offering two residential scholarships, offered to both a continuing and commencing student residing at St Ann’s.For information
