Our energy transition short courses will help you understand what the future of energy may look like and how your organisation might need to change to adapt to new opportunities and challenges.

We look at what you need to know about new energy systems, what economic impacts there will be during this transition and what strategies you should be looking at implementing to successfully navigate these changes.  

ASPER’s academic staff are involved in cutting-edge research related to the role of subsurface engineering and geoscience in the energy transition and will share with you their specific expertise in the injection and storage of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in geological formations and in other subsurface settings.

    What is covered  

    This course provides evidence-backed information, case studies and strategies for planning your organisation’s transition into the future energy landscape.

  • Subsurface carbon storage

    What is covered  

    A plan to permanently store carbon dioxide in the subsurface starts with an assessment and characterisation of potential storage sites and systems. This course will take you through these critical steps.  

    What you will learn  

    • How to identify fluid flow and storage in subsurface sedimentary rocks  
    • Potential geochemical and geomechanical impacts  
    • The basics of reservoir modelling and engineering  
    • How to determine seal capacity  
    • Options for well and reservoir injectivity  
    • The regulations you need to be aware of for this type of storage.  
  • Introduction to underground hydrogen storage

    What is covered  

    This course will equip you with fundamental knowledge related to the temporary storage of hydrogen fuel in subsurface geological formations.  

    What you will learn  

    • The basics of subsurface hydrogen storage including similarities and differences to carbon storage  
    • How to find a storage site  
    • Important considerations for risk assessments and Work Health and Safety obligations  
    • The specific processes required for hydrogen storage and recovery.

Our energy transition short courses can be co-delivered by the Centre for Energy Technology and the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition (HILT) CRC, which specialise in renewable energy technologies for industrial processes.  

Climate change and energy transition 

A 10-day multidisciplinary intensive course by our Stretton Institute will get you ready to plan and implement a transition. The course covers the latest scientifically backed, balanced and integrated understanding of the factors influencing and controlling climate change, and future energy scenarios.
