The Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) conducts high-quality research to inform rational decision-making in the development and implementation of road safety countermeasures.
Our experienced, multidisciplinary team seeks to understand how crashes and their resulting injuries are caused; and identify effective ways to reduce, if not eliminate, harm on our roads.
Based on this research, CASR regularly provides independent professional advice on road safety matters to government and non-government organisations in Australia and overseas.
Our expertise
CASR has considerable experience in conducting road crash investigations and provides independent advice on road safety matters to government and industry. We have particular expertise across the following areas:
Road User Safety
We investigate human operators’ role in road crashes, and explore potential interventions to prevent road accidents or reduce their impact.
Safe Road Infrastructure
Research in road infrastructure safety informs the development of more forgiving road environments through improved infrastructure planning, design, maintenance and management.
Safe Speeds
We examine the relationship between vehicle speeds, speed limits and road crashes. Our safe-speeds work benefits, and is immediately relevant to, all road users—drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Safer Vehicles
We identify opportunities to improve vehicle designs in order to prevent or minimise harm resulting from road use, including to pedestrians and cyclists. We consider improvements to both material design and technological features in all road-going vehicles.
Understanding Crashes
We seek to better understand the causes, characteristics and injury patterns associated with crashes to help reduce, and ultimately eliminate, road trauma.
