The Teletraffic Research Centre and Telstra have been working together for over 30 years on telecommunications network modelling and analysis.

Principal project: We have worked with Telstra to develop mobile network capacity planning tools for every major technology including 2G, 3G, 4G and now 5G. This project (codename “Devil”) combines detailed modelling and forecasting to provide Telstra engineers with guidance on how to optimise network investment. The models are focused on multiple user experience KPIs, such as mobile data download and upload speeds. By triggering capacity expansions based on user experience (both current and projected), Telstra is able to optimise investment in a manner that ensures mobile customer KPIs continue to be met. Devil operates in real-time, processing data from the entire Telstra cellular network every day in order to drive the models and produce summarised reporting. Telstra and the University of Adelaide have partnered to commercialise this technology for the international market.
