Bias in Science and Communication
In today’s life there are many complex issues where others are trying to persuade us to adopt viewpoints, or take actions.
One requirement for making good decisions is that we have unbiased information on which to base our beliefs. Or we might be the creators or providers of the information that others are using, in which case academic, if not moral, integrity requires that it not be biased towards supporting any particular belief.
Dr Matthew Welsh is a cognitive psychologist and ECMS Senior Research Fellow who has been working on bias for the past 15 years. He was commissioned by the Institute of Physics (London) to author a new book, Bias in Science and Communication: A Field Guide. Whether you are someone who wants to ensure integrity in your own communications, or wants to protect yourself from others who want to sway your beliefs using biased communication, this book is for you.
