Maths colloquium - Malte Peter (Universität Augsburg), "Water-wave scattering by many bodies and effects of periodic and almost periodic spacings"

At a colloquium hosted by the School of Mathematical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Malte Peter (Universität Augsburg) will provide an introduction to linear water-wave interaction with bodies of characteristic length comparable to wavelength.

Title: Water-wave scattering by many bodies and effects of periodic and almost periodic spacings
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Malte Peter, Universität Augsburg

Abstract: We give an introduction to linear water-wave interaction with bodies of characteristic length comparable to the wavelength and discuss efficient solution methods for scattering by a large number of bodies, e.g. fields of ice floes in the marginal ice zone. Particular attention is paid to wave focussing effects and exceptionally high loads on rigid bottom-mounted cylinders, which are arranged along a line or in a grid of constant or nearly constant spacing. The influence of Rayleigh-Bloch waves along finite line arrays is discussed and rainbow trapping of water waves by chirped grids is shown.

This is a joint work with L.G. Bennetts (University of Adelaide), R.V. Craster (Imperial College London) and F. Montiel (University of Otago).

The colloquium will be followed by a reception for our speaker in the staff tea room (Level 6, Ingkarni Wardli) from 4 - 5pm. All are welcome; drinks and nibbles will be provided.
