Presenters:
Dr Fiona Whelan will utilise her expertise in protein engineering to harness the natural sensing ability of bacteria with the potential for application as biosensors in diverse industries such as medical diagnostics, food security, biomonitoring and bioremediation. Dr Whelan has recently returned to Australia from the University of York in the UK.
Dr Stephen Warren-Smith returned to Adelaide in 2016 from the Institute of Photonic Technology in Germany. As a Ramsay Fellow in the School of Physical Sciences, Dr Warren-Smith develops very fine optical fibres with a range of potential industrial and diagnostic imaging applications.
Dr Stephanie Watts-Williams is investigating how fungi can improve the zinc nutrition of plants with particular focus on uncovering the molecular mechanisms. Originally from Melbourne, the Ramsay Fellowship brought Dr Watts-Williams back to Australia from the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, New York.
The Ramsay Fellowship was established in 2008 with a significant bequest from the Ramsay family to support outstanding young Australian scientists and enhance their potential as future scientific leaders. The four-year Fellowships encourage Australian scientists working overseas to return home.
