Airworthiness courses by the Gliding Federation of Australia
Students are invited to participate in airworthiness courses being run by the Gliding Federation of Australia here in SA.
Component Replacement - closed
Hosted by AV8 Flight Training and Airborne Research Australia
Where: Hangar 60 Dakota Drive, Parafield Airport SA
When: 23 - 27 September 2019
This authorises the holder of this rating to work on a GFA registered sailplane to replace non-critical components. It it does not authorise work on primary flight controls or essential instrumentation. It is the first step to becoming an Annual Inspector (equivalent of a LAME). It covers the theory and practice required by an inspector but requires more practice (SOE) and mentoring after the course before presenting as an inspector candidate.
It'ss a great intro to the mechanics and structures of sailplane/glider airframes and instrumentation, and references standard industry practice documents like AC43.
Minor Composite Repairs
Hosted by AV8 Flight Training and Airborne Research Australia.
Where: Hangar 60 Dakota Drive, Parafield Airport SA
When: 30 September - 4 October 2019
This authorises the holder to conduct minor repairs to composite structures, including analysis and design of the repair, reading manufacturers layup drawings, determining layup where drawings are not available, and hands on repairing and finishing the structure. Materials include fibreglass, carbon and kevlar as well as resins and fillers appropriate and authorised for certified aircraft.
This one is particularly valuable for students as experience with composites is a rare skill and becoming more important in the aviation sector. Teachers include Dr Caleb White (ex Boeing Composites and now Five Rings Aerospace), and Rudi Gassmeier and Wolfgang Lieff from the German Akafleig system.
