Just launched - International Space Competition co-organised by ESA and UofA
University of Adelaide researchers have recently collaborated with ESA scientists on an exciting space object detection project.

Associate Professor Tat-Jun Chin, Dr Bo Chen and Mr Daqi Liu from the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), in collaboration with Dr Mark Rutten from Intrack Solutions and the European Space Agency (ESA) have just launched their international space competition challenging participants to detect manmade objects in the geostationary and nearby orbits.
This achievement builds upon an ARC Linkage Project in 2016 between UoA, Inovor Technologies and DST Group. It also follows A/Prof Chin's team winning a previous competition organised by ESA.
The SpotGEO competition again illustrates the promise of AI techniques for space applications. The researchers involved spent many late evenings preparing the data required for the competition. The bushfires last year also contributed to the difficulty of the problem.
