ECMS researchers secure over $4 million in ARC funding
Congratulations to our ECMS researchers on their ARC Discovery grants and ARC Linkage Project grants.
The grants will go to furthering world-leading research that pushes the boundaries and has the potential to improve lives.
ARC Discovery grant program recipients
The ARC Discovery grant program supports excellent basic and applied research training by individuals and teams, and supports national and international research collaboration to enhance the scale and focus of research in Australian government priority areas.
Prof Shizhang Qiao from the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials has been awarded $700k to lead a team to develop safe and reliable solid-state zinc batteries.
Professor Simon Lucey from the Australian Institute of Machine Learning has been awarded $435k to build a geometric reasoning system that can exhibit human-like performance and provide new insights into how AI should understand the 3D world.
Dr Abel Santos from the School of Chemical Engineering and Advance Materials has been awarded $420k to develop advanced materials for the next generation of integrated circuits, bio-interfacial sensors, and energy generators.
Dr Judith Bunder from the School of Mathematical Sciences has been awarded $375k will lead a team to develop multiscale mathematical modelling of systems with complex microscale detail for application in industrial research and development.
Professor Veronica Soebarto from the School of Architecture and Built Environment has been awarded $375k to lead a team to advance knowledge about housing design and indoor environment to improve the wellbeing of older people with low socioeconomic status in South Australia.
Professor Nelson Tansu from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering together with Professor Glenn Solomon from the School of Physical Sciences were awarded $460,000 to investigate the integration of quantum nanostructures in optical devices to improve the efficiencies of existing optical devices, and create new classes of quantum photonics.
Professor Scott Smith from the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering has been awarded $308k to develop a prefabricated structural panel for current and future infrastructure applications.
Associate Professor Withawat Withayachumnankul from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering received $495k to lead a team to develop high efficiency antennas for high-frequency terahertz sources.
ARC Linkage Projects grant recipients
The ARC Linkage Projects scheme aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external partner organisations.
Associate Professor Alex Ng from the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering has been awarded $373k for an ARC Linkage project titled ‘Beyond the limits of corrosion detection in inaccessible areas’.
Associate Professor Nesimi Ertugrul from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has been awarded $151k for an ARC linkage project titled ‘A Novel Inline High-Efficiency Motor/Pump System’.
