Researchers awarded significant grants to progress pathway to renewable energy in Australia
Researcher awarded millions of dollars in grants by HILT CRC
Dr Alfonso Chinnici at the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering was awarded a $1.5M* grant by HILT CRC for a three-year program to advance research in carbon capture, re-utilisation and storage (CCUS) using innovative mineral carbonation methods that utilises waste from the heavy industry sector.
This program, which commenced in April 2024, is in collaboration with CSIRO and the University of Newcastle. It will assess the value proposition of innovative, cost-effective solutions to support project industry partners including South 32, Fortescue, Roy Hills, and AdBri with their decarbonisation journeys. It will also create value-added products from waste, in line with a circular economy approach.
The CCUS project complements two additional research programs awarded to Dr Alfonso Chinnici by HILT CRC:
- A $1M three-year program aimed at developing next-generation hydrogen burners to fast-track the adaptation of carbon-free fuels into heavy industry.
- A $0.5M one-year program in collaboration with Curtin University and ANU on innovative green beneficiation technologies for iron and bauxite ores.
