Reinventing the power grid: Renewable energy, storage and grid modernisation
Associate Professor launches comprehensive new book on the evolving power grid
Associate Professor Nesimi Ertugrul from the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering has launched a new book, which addresses the critical and influential subject of renewable energy, storage and grid modernisation.
The author examines the frailties of our existing grid, its reliance on fossil fuels, and the ecological impacts of persisting with current practices. Crucially, it highlights the advantages of integrating substantial quantities of sustainable, renewable, and decentralised energy sources.
Associate Professor Nesimi Ertugrul, author of the book, explained: “Electricity grids have been the backbone of modern civilization for more than a hundred years, operating mostly out of sight. Yet, the conventional grid, which depends heavily on centralised electricity generation from fossil fuels, is increasingly under scrutiny. Challenges such as outdated infrastructure, escalating energy needs, and climate change-related damages — exacerbated by the addition of renewable energy sources — necessitate a radical overhaul of our power grids. This publication serves as a clarion call for a reassessment of our electrical systems.”
The book is a must-read for industry professionals keen on keeping abreast of cutting-edge developments and trends in the energy sector and is equally as beneficial for students – both undergraduate and postgraduate – thanks to its thorough system-level perspective. The book’s use of actual data, supplemented with additional materials, will enhance students’ knowledge and lay the groundwork for professional advancement.
