Faculty of Sciences
The University of Sussex announced it has appointed Professor Keith Jones as its next Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise). Professor Jones is the current Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Adelaide and will take up the new role in September.

Agriculture, food and wine
Professor Christopher Preston features on Market Scanner as a guest speaker at the annual Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Update for Tasmania. Preston’s question and answer session focusses on how to tackle herbicide resistance with both new and old chemistries in Tasmanian farming systems.
Professor Preston also features on the Grain Central website in an article focusing on annual ryegrass control.
Professor Timothy Cavagnaro, Joseph Marks and Dr Thomas Lines feature on the Wine Titles news blog about providing input and advice into a project focused on baselining a vineyard’s soil organic carbon level.
Wine Australia reports about innovative projects underway in the Riverland region which are upping the ante and taking the science of precision watering to a new level. The program is led by viticulture and vineyard engineering expert Dr Vinay Pagay.
A nitrogen reference manual for the Southern Cropping Region has ongoing coverage across platforms, this week in Country News. This collaborative project was led by Associate Professor Matthew Denton.

Biological sciences
Molly Hennekam from the University's Unmanned Research Aircraft Facility features in *The Advertiser for her work with Seaton High School students training as qualified drone pilots.
Students began their team projects using their remote pilots license to identify, monitor and manage the weeds on Kangaroo Island and also to work with landowners to evaluate crop health.
Get Farming features a project led by Associate Professor Phill Cassey which aims to develop a long-term automated monitoring tool to improve Australia’s plant biosecurity.

Students and alumni
Wine graduates Mauricio Ruiz Cantú and Ben Caldwell, founders of Somos Wines, are celebrated on Good Fruit and Vegetables as representatives of McLaren Vale in the Young Gun of Wine Top 50.
Wine Titles shares that agriculture graduate and long-standing member of The Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO), William Hardy, received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to the wine industry.
